Tecky Gaming: Best video games of 2021

2021 marks the first year of the ‘next gen’ consoles in the form of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The arrival of these shiny new consoles means that a new set of games are coming out not only for them but for PC also which made 2021 one of the best years for gaming.

Hundreds of titles have come out for all platforms and they vary in the genre such as horror, action, shooter, etc. However, only a few have been memorable and in this blog, we want to share with you some of our favourites.

Here at Tecky Gaming, we love games of all types across all platforms which is why we decided to take a look back at some of our favourites and share them with you. Whether they be developed by triple-A or indie studios, these games are sure to give you a fun and enjoyable gameplay experience. So without further ado, here are some of the best games of 2021:

Forza Horizon 5

The long-running arcade racing series of Microsoft, Forza Horizon, has released their 5th instalment this year and it’s their best one yet! The previous game in the series already featured realistic graphics but Forza Horizon 5 took it to another level! Taking advantage of the new hardware of the next-gen consoles, the graphics on this game is lifelike and its frame rate is as smooth as butter.

Forza Horizon 5 takes place in a fictional representation of Mexico filled with streets, mountain ranges, rainforests and more. Each terrain changes up the way you drive your car which gives the game an additional layer of variety.

For example, a car that’s fast on the road may be deemed useless when it comes to off-road racing. Thankfully, the game provides the players with an expansive catalogue of cars that each vary in stats.

These vehicles are almost a perfect 1 to 1 replica of their real-life counterparts and the developers did a great job of making their designs and performance accurate.

New Pokemon Snap

The New Pokemon Snap is the follow-up to the popular game of the same name back in 1999. This time, the graphics and controls have been updated but the goal stays the same which is to take pictures of cute Pokemons.

This game puts you on a hub that’s built on rails which makes moving around the world seamlessly. You won’t have to worry about driving because it runs on autopilot which means that all you have to focus on is taking photos.

Long-time favourites such as Pikachu, Charizard, Bulbasaur and more make a return along with new characters that have been introduced in the TV show. This makes the game more bustling than usual and the variety of Pokemon is almost endless.

One of the best things to do in the game is to interact with the different Pokemons to get a better photo. For example, one creature may be hiding from you at first but once you throw food in their direction, they’ll be perfectly exposed for you to take a photo.

Deathloop

Arkane Lyon is one of the most beloved game developers in the industry thanks to their successful games such as the Dishonored series and their take on Prey. With Deathloop, they’ve done it once again by introducing a revolutionary gameplay feature.

Based on the name itself, it follows a gameplay loop mechanic where your character never dies. Instead, they’re taken back in time which means that you have to do everything all over again but with the added benefit of having the knowledge that you’ve learned during your initial run. This mechanic is only made better by the enjoyable gunplay which makes eliminating enemies a blast.

The goal of the game is to break the loop that you’re in and the only way to do this is by assassinating all the visionaries in the game which is no cakewalk. That’s where the core mechanic of the game comes into play because as you play through and get caught in the loop of dying, you’ll gain more information that you can use to your advantage.

All in all, Deathloop is an exciting game that offers a new experience which is something that you can’t find in other titles. On top of that, you’ll also be treated with memorable and loveable characters that will surely stick with you long after you beat the game.

Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil is one of the most successful franchises not just in the horror genre but in gaming, in general. With their eighth instalment, Resident Evil Village, they’ve proven once again that they’re one of the best in the industry when it comes to survival horror games.

The story picks up after the previous instalment with Ethan Winters remaining as the protagonist. However, this time, Ethan isn’t unfamiliar with combat like in the previous game. He’s more experienced as he underwent training which makes him more efficient in eliminating the foes that he encounters throughout the game.

Fans of Resident Evil 4 will get a kick out of this game because it closely resembles the 4th game with its village and castle settings. The merchant also makes a return but his appearance is drastically changed. All in all, it’s a great nod to the classic game and players will fall in love with it whether they’ve been long time fans or not.

The game follows the gameplay elements introduced in the previous instalment with the most noticeable one being the first-person perspective. This view immerses the players because it puts them in the driver’s seat. They don’t see the character that they’re using which makes it feel like they’re at the actual game.

Metroid Dread

Ever since Metroid Prime 4 was announced back in 2017, people have been craving to play another Metroid game. Although this year didn’t see the release of the 4th Prime instalment, Nintendo did release an amazing game that plays like the classic 2d games in the form of Metroid Dread.

The game is a side scroller and it takes you back to the early ‘90s when the classic Metroid games were released. In this instalment, you still play as Samus and your goal is to get back to your ship after losing all her powers. Enemies that are featured in this game include classic ones such as Artania, Burania, Elun and more.

Monster Hunter Rise

Monster Hunter Rise is the latest instalment to the world-famous franchise and it’s arguably one of the best ones to date. As of today, the game is still exclusive for the Nintendo Switch but it’s slated to release on PC early next year.

Unlike the previous games, Monster Hunter Rise adds verticality to the gameplay experience. Players can now jump and climb obstacles using the Wirebug which acts like a grappling hook.

At the beginning of the game, you’re given the chance to choose a character. Each of them varies in class, weapons and stats and they will give you a different gaming experience. Some of the classes that you’ll choose from in the game include:

  • The Sword and Shield
  • The Charge Blade
  • The Insect Glaive
  • The Bow.

On top of that, it still plays like a regular Monster Hunter game with all the role-playing elements such as equipping different armours and weapons on your character. The game also comes with different enemy types which means that you can’t just go in guns blazing. You have to be more strategic and equip yourself with weapons that can deal the best damage based on their weaknesses.

Hitman 3

Agent 47 returns once again in the biggest Hitman game to date, Hitman 3. This game lets you take out your targets in the most creative way possible. You’re given full freedom and you can do whatever you want but there are also paths that you can take that will then lead you to opportunities to assassinate your target.

Hitman 3 puts you on large maps with endless opportunities which encourages you to use your imagination. Some of the things that you’ll be doing to make sure that your operation goes to the plan include changing disguises, planting traps, using silent weapons and more.

This game also requires you to quickly think on your feet as everything may take an unexpected turn in a snap. When this happens, you need to have a backup plan to prevent you from being detected.
